Space, flat-four engines, reliability, driver enjoyment.
Anonymous-to-ugly styling, low ground clearance for off-roading.
The Legacy might be too bland for some, but it's an equally impressive all-rounder for executive motorway cruising or family load-lugging. Very able.

The Legacy is extremely user-friendly and easy to manoeuvre, despite its length. The steering is light and direct, and both the manual and automatic gearboxes are slick and smooth. The handling is very stable, secure and entirely predictable. The Legacy's certainly agile for its size, and as at home round tiny twisting country lanes as on motorways. The stiff suspension and well-tuned chassis give the potential for sporting behaviour, and the engines have more than enough power to be entertaining.
The Legacy might not be a storming rally-winner these days, but all models are strong all-round performers. The handling is more than secure enough for pushing it hard; the flat-four engines are pretty lively, even the base 2-litre, accelerating briskly and cruising comfortably. The 2.5 4-Cam is a real executive express for motorway miles, and a worthy rival to the VW Passat syncro and Audi A6 quattro.
