Lexus RX 300 (2003-) Review

Category: Sporting 4x4s 3.5 out of 5

Summary of the Lexus RX 300 (2003-)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Quality, nice engine noise when you can hear it, very quiet, looks good; excellent Lexus reliability and customer service.

Drawbacks

Lacklustre performance, no diesel, auto 'box, float with coil springs, thump with air-suspension, not really an off-roader or towing vehicle.

Verdict

Scores well for refinement and specification, and a very good car for on-road use, but not particularly dynamic to drive, and not very versatile for something so large.

Review

Running Costs3.5 out of 5

High residual values of around 45 percent over three years make the RX 300 one of the more affordable cars in this class to run. However, it's available with that 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine only, no diesel, which means a deficit at the pumps compared to come rivals, as its combined consumption figure is only 23.3mpg. Servicing costs should be no higher than its rivals, though; nor should insurance. Because of the company's exceptional customer satisfaction survey results, it's hard to argue against the RX 300 as a used car. It just shouldn't go wrong, and decent long-term residual values will be a bonus to the used buyer, too. There aren't many around, though. Compared to its rivals, like-for-like, the RX 300 is well priced. It's stacked with standard equipment and constitutes a lot of car for the money. For what it's worth, we think the lower-end coil-sprung versions represent better value than the air-suspended SE-L, although the rear-view camera and touch-screen satellite navigation is choice indeed.
