Toyota Corolla (1997-2002) Review

Category: Small Family 3 out of 5

Summary of the Toyota Corolla (1997-2002)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Choice, reliability, new styling.

Drawbacks

Not as cheap as other mainstream rivals. Another restyle is imminent.

Verdict

Smart new styling has brought the Corolla firmly into the next millenium, and Toyota's superb engineering ensures there's all the substance needed as well. More expensive than some alternatives, but you get what you pay for in terms of quality and ongoing reliability, as well as the Corolla's well-proven, if anonymous, heritage.

Review

Overview3 out of 5

Family friendly

The long-running Corolla range has been one of the world's best-selling ranges ever, superb reliability being a major reason for its success. With practical three- and five-door hatchbacks, one saloon model available, compact estates and some modestly sporty variants, the current Corolla comes in sufficient variety to please most buyers, and it also offers great long-term dependability. Until the launch in 1997 of this latest range, the Corolla's biggest turn-off was its boring, frumpy looks, but this seventh-generation car (yes, really) has been completely modernised and restyled (albeit a little strangely) to appeal to a much more image-conscious audience. Was replaced by an all-new model in 2002.
