Frugal, refined engine, practical, well-built.
Not particularly agile, numb steering.
There are better-handling hot hatches, but as a 'sporting' diesel there are few credible rivals.

The Octavia vRS is comfortable and noise is generally well-suppressed, but an unacceptable amount of road noise still comes through to the cabin.
The ride is excellent and it is a pleasure to drive on the motorway thanks largely to the firm, yet cosseting sports seats.
There's no shortage of leg- and headroom. You also get an ample 560 litres of bootspace and 1,350 litres with the rear seats down. This beats the Volkswagen Golf GTi, Ford Focus ST, Seat Leon FR and Vauxhall Astra SRi for luggage space.
Standard equipment includes 17" alloy wheels, twin chrome exhaust pipes, oversized vRS bumpers, a rear spoiler, vRS designed sport seat, a three-spoke leather steering wheel, red brake callipers and lowered suspension.
Climate control, a single CD stereo with MP3 auxilliary jack, cruise control, height and reach adjustable steering, height adjustable driver's seat and electric front windows are standard.
Options include an electric sunroof (£650), front and rear parking sensors (£500), sat nav (£1,540), Bluetooth (£150), xenon headlights with headlamp washers (£550), heated front seats (£250) and curtain airbags (£280).
