Frugal, refined engine, practical, well-built.
Not particularly agile, numb steering.
There are better-handling hot hatches, but as a 'sporting' diesel there are few credible rivals.

The last time the Octavia was crash-tested by Euro NCAP, it received four out of five stars for adult occupancy protection, a decent result back then. Unfortunately, five stars is now the class norm.
However, the Octavia now comes with more standard safety equipment, so a retest may see the Octavia receive that coveted fifth star.
All versions of the Octavia are fitted with anti-lock brakes, anti-skid control, brake assist and stability control. Pre-tensioning seat belts in the front are height-adjustable and there are four airbags - front and side. Curtain airbags are offered as an option.
An immobiliser, central locking and alarm are standard-fit items.
