Based on tried-and-tested VW mechanicals, and has scored well in reliability surveys, but not immune to problems; early cars had problems with water leaks and poor trim, and there were a few reports of ECU faults in 1.8T and TDI 110 models. The 1.8T 20-valve engine has also been problematic across all VW Group models, with ignition coil, timing belt and air mass sensor failures. Owners have also reported clutch problems in the more powerful diesels, and timing belt and gearbox problems in 1.4 and 1.6 petrols, plus general poor running of diesels with power losses and sticking turbos.
