Saab Turbo X Review

On the road4 out of 5

The XWD (cross-wheel drive) fitted to the Turbo X is an 'intelligent' active system that continuously distributes the torque from the engine to the front or rear wheels, depending on the road conditions

The system is based around a fourth-generation Haldex four-wheel-drive unit, which operates in conjunction with an electronic limited slip differential. As result Saab's engineers have had to reset the 9-3's chassis settings and there's also revised rear suspension. The car's ESP and ABS have also been tuned to intervene at a higher threshold than in the front-wheel-drive models.

What this means on the road is that the Turbo X is terrifically composed at all times. Throw the car into a corner, even at a higher speed than normal, and it feels agile and precise, with a lot less understeer than you'll find on the standard 9-3. The car feels stable at all times and the suspension (MacPherson struts at the front, independent four-link at the rear) is supple and forgiving, providing an accomplished ride.

The automatic and manual gearboxes are both six-speed. The engine has also been uprated for the Turbo X edition, now producing 276bhp and 295lb-ft of torque, helping it to a 0-62mph time of 5.4 seconds (5.6 for the SportWagon) and a limited top speed of 155mph.
