Individuality, detail design and generous equipment levels, room, comfort and safety equipment. Turbo engines very effective.
Pricey, and a little inspirationless to drive. Quality not top-notch.
In 9-3 guise (this model was previously badged 900 and has been around for quite some years) Saab's smallest can no longer match the class best.

The 9-3 has quite a smooth ride quality, and this, coupled with Saab's excellent heating and ventilation, sets the scene for what should be a good long distance machine. However, the driving position and reach-only adjustable steering wheel let it down. It could also be quieter, especially in diesel form. In its class of somewhat cramped cars, the 9-3 does better than average, with decent rear room and a generous, sensibly shaped boot. Conveniently positioned and easy to use, the stereo scores highly for ergonomics. Most models have a CD player too. Sound quality is average.
