Distinctive image; excellent new diesel engine; E85 option; well-designed cabin; value for money.

Thirsty petrol engines.

Verdict

Substantially updated and ever more powerful, the Saab 9-3 can be a great drive as well as a practical, safe and sensible purchase. A very nicely thought-out all-rounder.

Saab 9 3 Review

Reliability and Quality4 out of 5

There were some problems with the Fiat-supplied diesel engine in the last range - exhaust gas valves, water pump and timing belt failures - and independent specialists recommend frequent oil changes for the 2.0 petrol engines to avoid sludging-up, but otherwise, Saab seems to have got on top of the problems which affected early 9-3s.

Saabs have always been structurally tough and rugged, and go on to very high mileages: this new 9-3 should be no exception.
