Thirsty petrol engines
Substantially updated and more powerful, the Saab 9-3 Convertible is a very nicely thought-out all-rounder.

As ever with Saabs, ride quality can vary greatly according to the choice of wheels and tyres. 16", 17" or 18" alloy wheels are fitted according to model; all are firm-riding, but Aero versions can be a trifle unforgiving.
This is more than made up, however, by the wonderfully comfortable seats; the Convertible's, with integrated seatbelts, are unique to this model and are supportive and multi-adjustable.
General refinement is very good: wind, engine and tyre noise are all well-contained and there are no traces of squeaks, rattles or other annoyances, even in the first new-generation cars off the Trollhatten production line.
The three-layer hood has been improved, with a thicker fleece central layer and a tough rubberised canvas outer layer, and the light-coloured inner layer is a nicer touch - it makes the cabin feel much airier and roomier when the roof is up. For open-top driving, the roof stows away neatly under a flat tonneau cover. It's also gained a stitched-in guttering to prevent water build-up and dripping inside when the door is opened.
The 9-3 isn't the roomiest in its class, but there is acceptable rear legroom for this type of car and a largish boot with a retracting well: this allows for extra space when the roof is up and can carry two large golf bags or similar.
Equipment levels are generous, with a good iPod/MP3-compatible audio system and all the essentials in all versions. Bluetooth phone kit is available and there is a good choice of attractive upholstery options.
