Renault was the first to spot the gap in the market for a scaled-down MPV with its spectacularly successful Scenic, a car which became a template for other big companies to follow. Formerly European Car of the Year, the Scenic was facelifted in 1999 and comes with 1.4 16-valve, 1.6 16-valve and 2.0 16-valve engines, and two 1.9 turbo-diesels. The four-wheel drive RX4 is reviewed separately. An all-new Scenic was launched in the autumn of 2003. Until then, this generation of Scenic made acceptable and practical family transport.
