Efficient engines, more upmarket cabin, competitively priced.
Bland looks, dull drive, not as spacious as some rivals.
A competent family car with frugal diesel engines, but it's pretty uninspiring and certainly not a class leader.

There's no getting away from it, Renault's record here is dreadful. The last Megane came 72nd in the 2008 JD Power consumer survey - a disastrous result, with owners reporting faults with major components including the suspension and engines.
But the French brand says it's improved and is on a mission to build cars that attain German levels of quality and robustness.
There are obvious improvements the second you climb aboard this Megane Estate. The cabin looks and feels reassuringly well made, with more upmarket materials used for the dashboard, seats and cabin inserts than you expect to see in a car of this class (in fact, much of the switchgear is borrowed from the Laguna).
That's no indication of future reliability, but it's a step in the right direction and saves the Megane from scoring lower in this section.
