Porsche image and engineering, fine on-road behaviour, surprising off-road ability.
Not as exciting or economical as you'd like - and is an Audi-engined SUV really a Porsche?
A well-engineered, quality product, though the world doesn't really need it.

The Cayenne Diesel is suitably refined and well-upholstered, and the extra sound-proofing does eliminate any unwanted diesel-engine din. The seats are well-shaped and supportive, there's enough room for three in the back, and a reasonably generously-sized boot completes a useful all-round package. A power-opening tailgate is optional, as are a large tinted-glass powered sunroof, roof rails, a towbar system and bi-xenon cornering-beam headlamps.
Steel-spring suspension is standard, and ride quality is good, even on the large wheels and performance-oriented tyres. Porsche's air-sprung, adaptive active-damping and self-levelling system is optional, giving a 110mm range for ride-height adjustment.
Specification includes 12-way adjustable seats, air conditioning and a 12-speaker MP3/single-slot CD/DVD radio, with further options including a touch-screen phone/ satnav/communications system, a Bose surround-sound hi-fi, a six-CD autochanger, TV tuner, 40GB hard-drive sat nav/audio and universal-input USB audio interface.
