Huge amounts of grip; sharp, direct steering; quick-shifting automatic gearbox; excellent performance.
Expensive to run, manual gearchange a little unwieldy, heavy clutch.
The four-wheel-drive Porsche 911 is now even better.

The 911 has not been crash tested by Euro NCAP but Porsche says there have been a number of improvements in the body structure to maximise the chances of injury-free collisions. Porsche's Side Impact Protection system is included in both the Coupe and Cabriolet. There are a total of six airbags, including two thorax, front and door airbags.
A rollover safety system is made up of two reinforced steel tubes in the A-pillars and two rollbars that, in the event of a collision, move up automatically behind the rear seats to give extra protection.
There's an alarm and immobiliser as well as a Thatcham 5 category approved Vehicle Tracking System that follows the location of the car if it is stolen.
