Porsche's infrequent showing in reliability and satisfaction surveys in the UK mean that it's difficult to objectively judge how a modern 911 fares out in the real world.
In the US the brand is celebrating a number one spot in the JD Power reliability survey, which found Porsches suffered the lowest number of problems per 100 cars, ahead of Japanese luxury brands Infiniti and Lexus.
The previous model suffered from costly engine main seal failures, but Porsche insists the all-new engine blocks' superior stiffness mean this will not be a problem.
As for quality, there's a welcome boost with the facelifted car's interior. In the old car, some of the plastics, particularly around the stereo and centre console, felt below par. The upgrading is a definite improvement, but it still misses out on some of the aesthetic highlights of the Audi R8.
