Distinctive styling, strong diesel line-up, pedestrian safety; good ride.
Rear seat and boot space, heavier than predecessor, complex electronics not a Peugeot strong point.
Combines high style with a hugely competent chassis and good all-round capabilities.

The 407 does particularly well here. It can be specified with up to nine airbags, including side, curtain and knee items. Electronic stability control, which works very well indeed, is standard on all models, as is ABS braking and brake force distribution.
The 407 is taking a big lead on pedestrian safety, too. As well as impact-absorbing foam around the likely front impact area on the nose of the car, the bonnet has a soft deformable area (you can flex it deeply with just a finger-push) where you'd expect the head of a pedestrian to impact. In addition, the front end has been engineered to be more 'crash friendly' to smaller vehicles. Grisly stuff, but if you have to be mowed down by a car, this is the one to step in front of... The 407 has an ultrasonic alarm and immobiliser as standard fit.
