Price Range: £19,245 to £26,795
Chunky styling, loads of torque, towing ability, adept off-road
Impractical around town, if you need to go there, overdone styling
It's a good compromise between a family 4x4 and a working vehicle, although it does seem a shame to get it dirty

Pick-up trucks were once the preserve of builders, workmen and farmers, used solely for doing a particularly messy job. But these days, they're marketed more and more as lifestyle accessories, or as vehicles to work in during the week and use like a normal car at the weekends - and trucks such as the Nissan Navara have equipment levels and cabin comfort on a par with many passenger cars. Popular with vets, landscape gardeners and small business owners, so we're told, the Navara was updated in 2002 to get more aggressive styling and a new 133bhp turbodiesel engine. Bob the Builder never had so much power - or chrome.
The Navara is the range-topping model in Nissan's creatively-named PickUp range; all-new King Cab and Double Cab versions (see separate road test) go on sale in September 2005, but the Single Cab models of this generation will continue for another year, badged simply 'PickUp' now.
