Performance, on-road handling, value for money, fun image.
Loud engines, interior quality.
The X-Trail is a good drive on road and more than adequate off-road, but it's not quite as refined as it should be.

Nissan's Almera and Almera Tino have both scored four stars in the Euro-NCAP crash tests, so the X-Trail should do well, too. Tall 4x4s with high ground clearance are always more subject to rollovers on collision than normal cars, but the X-Trail does feel more stable than many. Standard kit includes ABS, EBD and Brake Assist, driver and front passenger airbags, ISOFIX child-seat mounting points, a rear centre three-point seatbelt and an immobiliser. Sport and SE+ specifications add side airbags and an alarm, and ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) is optional.
