Category: Small 4x4s
Price Range: £19,245 to £26,795
Tough, well equipped, good value; adept off road and civilised on road.
Not as posh as the Freelander.
A very good all-rounder, and better on the rough than most 4x4s.

The X-Trail has, so far, held its value well, especially in diesel form. As a Nissan, its servicing and maintenance costs are relatively low, and it shouldn't be particularly expensive to insure. The 150bhp diesel returns 39.8mpg and 190g/km of carbon dioxide (34.9mpg/216g/km with the auto gearbox) and the 173bhp 2.0 dCi 38.2mpg/198g/km; all quite reasonable for an SUV this size, and staying out of the highest tax banding.
The 2.0 petrol gives 32.5mpg/208g/km (33.2mpg/204g/km with the CVT) and the 2.5 a rather less creditable 29.4mpg/230g/km (manual) or 30.4mpg/223g/km (CVT), the latter at least sneaking out of tax band G.
