Category: Small 4x4s
Price Range: £19,245 to £26,795
Tough, well equipped, good value; adept off road and civilised on road.
Not as posh as the Freelander.
A very good all-rounder, and better on the rough than most 4x4s.

It's a tough thing, with a particularly rigid structure and body shell. There were some problems with the Renault-supplied diesel engines in the MkI, mainly turbo/intercooler failures, but that engine's now been replaced. Aside from that, the X-Trail has consistently scored well in customer satisfaction and reliability surveys, and Nissan itself has a good record in this department.
General quality is better than before, with stronger looking cabin plastics and upholstery, though this hasn't really been a problem anyway - we've seen hard-used five-year-old X-Trails which still look pretty good both inside and out.
