Review

Running Costs4 out of 5

The Primera is competitively-priced, and dealers are usually open to a bit of haggling. Watch out too for cut-price, high-specced ex-demo models, special editions and also for delivery-mileage pre-registered cars - there's no need to pay full list price on any Primera. Savings at purchase will offset the potentially high depreciation (loss in value); although the Primera is a popular used buy due to its good record for reliability, it just doesn't command strong prices on the secondhand market. Otherwise, insurance costs are reasonable (from Group 8E), fuel economy and tax-bandings respectable (the sixth gear cuts down motorway fuel consumption in the 2.0 and diesel, the latter returning an excellent 46.3 mpg on the combined cycle). Nissan sells the Primera with a three-year, 60,0000-mile warranty, a year's free roadside assistance and 12 years' anti-perforation cover; servicing comes up every 9000 miles for petrol engines and every 12,000 for diesels; these sound like short intervals, but take into account the usual 'recommended' oil changes which other manufacturers don't always quote and the first services are really only minor pit-stops.
