Good value for money, should be very reliable, a competent all-rounder
Some rivals come up cheaper, not hugely spacious, fussy interior
A perfectly respectable alternative to the more mainstream choices in this sector

Now into its second incarnation, though you could be forgiven for not noticing it first time around - barely 100 examples of the outgoing model have found homes in the UK since its launch in 1999 - the imaginatively-named Mazda MPV has been revised. The weedy 2.0-litre petrol engine has been replaced by a choice of two much better motors, the 2.3-litre petrol and new 2.0-litre diesel as fitted in the impressive new Mazda6 range. Mazda has also tweaked its suspension, brakes and chassis, as well as making a few minor changes to the exterior styling, so it's slightly less anonymous than before, yet the earlier model's benefits of space, generous specification and excellent build quality and reliability continue. All this means this smartly-styled seven-seater is a much more appealing proposition, and a viable alternative to the usual Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra/Espace/Previa family-transporters.
