Mitsubishi Outlander (2003-2007) Review

Category: Small 4x4s 3 out of 5

Summary of the Mitsubishi Outlander (2003-2007)

Price Range: £19,664 to £24,964

Assets

4x4-alike styling, high driving position, car-like handling, well-priced and well-equipped

Drawbacks

Petrol engine not that powerful, not a real off-roader, restricted boot space

Verdict

It's an attractive, competitively-priced proposition - but it would have been better with a diesel engine and manual gearbox.

Mitsubishi Outlander Review

Overview3 out of 5

The Outlander aims to combine the rugged looks and high driving position of a 4x4 with the handling and driving dynamics of a conventional estate car; it's one of the new breed of so-called 'crossover' vehicles. Or it's neither a roomy station wagon nor a proper 4x4, depending on which way you look at it. Car-like in its underpinnings - the Outlander shares its platform and four-wheel drive system with the high-performance Lancer Evolution VIII saloon - yet tall, chunky and aggressive, it's certainly different, and could suit those who like the Shogun, but can't justify something quite so big and uncompromising. Its nearest rival is probably the Subaru Forester, but the Outlander is likely to appeal to buyers considering a RAV-4, CR-V, X-Trail or even a Freelander, if all-out mud-plugging ability is less of a priority than making the right impression on the school run. It would suit a growing family, or perhaps older people downsizing from a huge 4x4; it should be able to tow small caravans or light horse trailers competently.

The Outlander is offered in the UK with just one engine choice, a 2.4-litre, 158bhp petrol unit, and with four-speed automatic transmission only. There is the option of a bi-fuel LPG conversion, too, fully warranted by Mitsubishi and costing an extra £1000. There are three trim levels, however, Equippe, Sport and Sport SE and even the Equippe is well-specified, with ABS anti-lock brakes, front and side airbags, climate control, electric front and rear windows, alloy wheels and roof rails, as well as plain, good-quality monochrome upholstery and tasteful dashboard.

Prices + versions: Six versions costing £16,999-£18,749

It has two further sister models, too: the Citroen C-Crosser and the Peugeot 4007, effectively Outlanders built by Mitsubishi for PSA.
