Category: Superminis
Price Range: £7,999 to £12,849
Energetic and refined engine, cheap to buy, well equipped.
Obtrusive A-pillars, small boot, fidgety ride, poor attention to detail.
Irritating foibles ruin an otherwise cheap and cheerful alternative to the usual superminis.

The 2009 Mitsubishi Colt features hazard lights that now flash under emergency braking, but even this useful safety addition cannot prevent the Colt from lagging behind its rivals.
The previous-generation car received a fine (back then) four stars for adult occupancy protection and three for child protection in Euro NCAP crash tests. Almost all of its more modern alternatives outclass the Colt in all areas.
The pre-facelifted Colt received just one star in its ability to protect pedestrians in an impact, but this may improve with the 2009 model: Mitsubishi has reworked the headlamps, bonnet and bumper to reduce injuries to pedestrian in the event of accident.
