Standard ABS and electronic brake-force distribution help you avoid an accident, as does the optional (and non-switchable) stability control. Should the worst happen, side and curtain airbags look after you as well as the usual front pair, but only the front ones are standard, the others optional.
The third rear seat belt can be retracted into the rear pillar and its end stowed in the roof when not needed. Only the 1.5 has rear disc brakes, surprisingly.
The Colt's frontal crash structure is quite different from that of the Japanese-market versions, to cope with our more stringent crash-test requirements. There's an immobiliser, as with all new cars, and all models come with remote central locking and an alarm.
