Reliability, durability, ease of ownership
Small, bland and not particularly cheap
Never a bargain new, the now-discontinued 1996-2004 Colt looks better value secondhand, though it's not particularly roomy, nor especially comfortable.

This Colt has now been replaced by a far roomier, more versatile and more modern Colt (see separate road test), a twin to the trendy Smart Forfour, but few people noticed - it has been rather overlooked. Small compared with contemporary superminis, an uninspired drive and with a low-quality interior, it could never compete with more accomplished rivals, and the new Colt is better in every way. But as a secondhand buy, it looks more appealing: it is reliable and durable, and as many were bought by careful older owners, it's easy to find meticulously-maintained, low-mileage Colts at reasonable prices. Available in three-door form only, the Colt came with 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines; Mirage models have alloy wheels and sportier trim, and there have been a number of well-equipped special edition models.
