Servicing, insurance and tax will all be very expensive, but the normal rules about the cost of ownership don't apply to the SLR. If you buy one you become a member of the SLR Club, which involves a unique relationship with Mercedes-Benz. It also involves being very rich.
There are no meaningful figures for the SLR's retained value, as few have come up on the secondhand market. What's actually been happening is that people who bought an SLR coupe within a year or two of its launch have subsequently bought a 722 version as well, and some will add an SLR Roadster to their collection over the next few months. The first people to be given the chance to drive the soft-top were coupe owners, and many returned the compliment by placing an order.
