Mercedes SL-Class Review

Comfort and Equipment4 out of 5

Despite its sporting nature, the SL 63 AMG still has much of the cruising character of the SL it's based on. The nappa leather, heated, multi-way electrically adjustable AMG sports seats are wonderfully cosseting; the Airscarf system keeps your neck warm when the top's down; and the fully adjustable steering wheel means a comfortable driving position is guaranteed.

The ride is also surprisingly compliant, especially when the Comfort setting is chosen, and even the UK's dodgy road surfaces should give it no real problem.

There's plenty of standard equipment, as you'd expect for the high asking price. The interior kit includes those seats, a three-spoke steering wheel and an excellent updated version of Mercedes-Benz's Comand infotainment system that features a radio with twin tuner (analogue and DAB), CD/DVD changer, SD card reader, iPod connectivity, a 40GB hard drive to store music and navigation data, sat nav, a 6.5-inch colour screen, Bluetooth and a Linguatronic voice control system.

On the outside, there are a host of additional AMG features, including 19-inch alloys, a bonnet unique to the AMG SL, new front apron, black radiator grille, larger air intakes, side skirts, spoiler lip on the bootlid and a new rear apron with diffuser a two twin oval tailpipes.

But if you feel that £102K just isn't enough, there are plenty of options to splash the cash on. A Performance pack with suspension tweaks and different dampers, plus a limited slip differential will set you back £8,230. Alternatively/additionally, there's a Driver's pack for £2,230 that includes ECU adjustments that increase the speed to 186mph and an 'AMG Power and Passion' driving course to help you handle all that extra speed.

And you can push the boat out even further if you start optioning from AMG's Performance Studio that has a range of exterior colours and leathers.
