Powerful, smooth 6.2-litre V8; blend of performance and comfort; mean styling.

Super saloon mixes impressive performance with everyday usability.

Mercedes has recovered its once-tarnished reputation for quality, but AMG takes that attention to detail to new levels. We visited the plant near Stuttgart and saw the meticulously clean, rigidly organised environment in which AMG builds its engines. One single mechanic is responsible for each stage of the engine's assembly - he even signs his name on the block when it's finished. You would struggle to find such personalised service anywhere else this side of Rolls-Royce.
Away from the engine, all the fixtures and fittings on our test car were up to the highest standards, with a comfortable and well-appointed cabin.
The standard version of the latest E-Class also scores four out of five in JD Power consumer satisfaction surveys.
