Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe (2009-) Review

Category: Executive 3 out of 5

Summary of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe (2009-)

Price Range: £33,285 to £48,360

Assets

Quality cabin, high comfort levels, punchy 2.1-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines.

Drawbacks

Not very exciting to drive, limited headroom in rear seats, gloopy manual gearbox.

Verdict

Lacks coupe-like road manners despite the Coupe tag - it's more of a comfortable cruiser.

Mercedes E-Class Coupe Review

Comfort and Equipment4 out of 5

The E-Class Coupe is a comfortable place to be when sat up front, but it's not so comfortable in the back. You can't complain about the seating though - it's cosseting and supportive with plenty of adjustment to cater for all manner of body types. The electronic rake-and-reach adjustment on the steering wheel also helps you to find the perfect driving position.

The ride can be quite wallowy even on the Sport setting and don't be surprised if your passengers start looking quite nauseous after a lengthy stint on twisty B-roads.

Wind and road noise is well contained, but you still get a bit of engine rumble coming through the cabin on both diesels when you are accelerating away at low speeds or chuntering around town. It quietens down when you get up to cruising speed and the cabin is virtually silent on the motorway. The petrols are all wonderfully refined and the engine noise is barely perceptible at any speed.

The low profile does hinder visibility though. The view out the back is restricted and the fairly low seating position and chunky A-pillars can restrict your sight-line when you are approaching roundabouts and checking for oncoming traffic.

There's enough legroom at the back but anyone approaching 6 foot might find his or her head touching the sloping roof.

Mercedes hasn't skipped on kit. The SE models get 17" alloys, parking guidance, Bluetooth handsfree, leather upholstery, heated front seats, leather steering wheel, climate control and aluminium trim details.

Upgrade to the Sport model and you get 18" alloys, AMG bodykit, Intelligent Light System which includes a system to stop dazzling oncoming drivers, LED daytime running lights, sports-tuned suspension, steering and braking, sports steering wheel and sporty seats, stainless steel pedals, AMG floor mats and aluminium details.
