Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG (2008-) Review

Category: Exotic Sports 4 out of 5

Summary of the Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG (2008-)

Price Range: £43,957 to £73,997

Assets

Obscenely fast, grippy, fantastic to look at, plenty of safety features.

Drawbacks

Pricey, rear space is compromised, huge running costs, poor residuals.

Verdict

The standard CLS is no slouch, but this thing just raises the bar. It's a perfectly manageable high-class hot rod.

Mercedes CLS-Class Review

Running Costs2 out of 5

Big Mercs are never exactly cheap to run: better fuel economy and lower emissions come with the refreshed CLS, but it's hardly a planet-saver and the AMG, in particular, is right in the heart of tax-busting and fuel-gorging territory.

Drive like a granny and you might get 28mpg from it. Drive it like you should and you'll get 12.5mpg. The official combined fuel consumption tells you that you should get 19.5mpg. Rearrange the words 'lucky', 'you'll' and 'be' and you should get a fair idea of your fuel bill.

Insurance? Well, it's in group 20, so you'll be paying the pound-of-flesh nearest-the-heart rate then.

Servicing intervals are determined by the onboard computer, which should reduce the number of trips to the dealer. When you do get there prepare to start writing large numbers on the cheque.
