Smart looks, rear-wheel drive handling.
Pricey, patchy quality, poor ride, not sporting, limited rear visibility.
CLC benefits from style overhaul, but ultimately lags behind its rivals in drive, performance and quality.

Like the old car the CLC is adept at covering big distances at high speeds in hushed comfort - except, that is, when the large glass sunroof is fitted - it brings a noticeable increase in wind noise.
On anything less than perfectly-surfaced, billiard-table smooth Tarmac and the ride falls apart. Even without the sport suspension on non-standard 17-inch wheels, the CLC jolts over sharp ridges and shudders over large potholes.
There's just two trims to choose from with the CLC: the base SE or the Sport. SE models gain a faux-leather interior, climate control and 16" alloy wheels.
Spend £1,100 more and you bag the Sport model. This adds large 18" alloys, sports suspension and shift paddles if it's an automatic.
Four additional option packs are available in conjunction with the trim level. Comfort Package buys nothing of the sort. For £400 extra, it merely introduces electric folding mirrors, auto wipers and an auto dimming interior mirror.
Visibility Package (£800), meanwhile, adds bi-xenon lamps and cornering lamps. Spending a further £1,200 gets you the pricey Exclusive Package that adds electric motors to power the seats and an uprated climate control.
Finally, £1,500 adds heated real leather upholstery, while an additional £1,400 introduces a large glass sliding sunroof.
