Mercedes CLC Review

Running Costs4 out of 5

All the new engines bar the CLC 350 auto are cleaner and more fuel efficient.

Lowest running costs belong to the 120bhp diesel that averages a frugal 48.7mpg - 5.2mpg more than the old engine. carbon dioxide emissions are reduced to 152g/km, 12% less than before.

Fractionally less efficient is the CLC 220 CDI: the more powerful 148bhp returns 47.9mpg and emits 156g/km of CO2.

The most efficient petrol engine in the C180 Kompressor returns a fine 39.2mpg and emits 170g/km of carbon dioxide, while the substantially more powerful 182bhp version of the same supercharged 1.8-litre engine still averages a reasonable 38.7mpg while producing just 4g/km more.

Worst for costs is, naturally, the most powerful flagship engine in the range. The 268bhp drinks at a rate of 28.2mpg and emits 239g/km, well above the 225g/km £25 London congestion charge limit.
