Mercedes CL-Class Coupe Review

Safety and Security5 out of 5

Mentioning that the CL is a five-star Euro NCAP car barely scratches the surface. In terms of security and passive safety, the CL is state-of-the-art, and on Merc's list of 44 technical and equipment highlights, more than half are directly concerned with safety.

Of these, the one currently unique to the CL is Pre-Safe Brake, a development of two existing radar-based systems: Pre-Safe - which when it detects an impending accident moves the passenger seat for optimum seat belt effectiveness, inflates seat air cushions and closes windows - and Brake Assist Plus, which warns of an imminent collision and delivers the required braking force when the pedal is pressed.

The new Pre-Safe Brake delivers the warnings but with more sophisticated radar also provides automatic partial braking, with still more braking available at the pedal. The thinking is that even if you have a collision, at least it'll be at a lower speed.
