Baby Benz looks, much-improved driving experience, sumptuous cabins, smooth ride, refined engines
Still rather conservative, still not as sharp to drive as some rivals
C55 AMG apart, the C-Class isn't the most involving drive for high-performance enthusiasts, but it's a class act

The C-Class scores the full five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests, and this latest model comes packed with high-tech developments. Standard safety equipment includes front two-stage airbags, side airbags, window bags, seatbelt pretensioners and force limiters, ABS with ESP (electronic stability programme) and Brake Assist, and options include bi-xenon headlamps with adaptive beams to 'see' around corners, and run-flat tyres. Security comes from an alarm and immobiliser, and Mercedes' door locks and thick window glass usually stand up well to criminal attention.
