After an early and unfortunate encounter, in which the A-Class literally fell over during a Swedish moose-avoidance test, Mercedes' smallest model was re-engineered with revised suspension and skid-countering electronic stability programme as standard. All cars sold in the UK have been equipped with this. The A-Class scored four stars in the NCAP crash tests, though it was tested in 1999, since when the criteria have been tightened. Four airbags are standard equipment, as are ABS anti-lock brakes; head 'bags are an option.
