The body of the third-generation MX-5 uses more high-strength steel in its construction than previous models to create a more rigid body. This, combined with a strengthened A-pillar and rear bulkhead, should make the MX-5 quite crash-safe, although there are no official EuroNCAP results as yet.
Side airbags join the standard two front airbags on the 2.0-litre model, along with (switchable) dynamic stability control. The entry-level 1.8-litre version does without DSC, so gives a more raw driving experience.
A Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser are standard fit, with remote central locking on all models.
