There's more than you'd think in this tea-tray on wheels. First, the ride is surprisingly supple and second, the seats are quite comfortable. No, it isn't quiet and yes, you would welcome lying down after eight hours at the wheel. But given its purpose - raw entertainment - it's not bad at all. Given that it's a strict two-seater, it's okay, but storage space in the cabin is minimal, and the boot is hardly a bottomless void. So pack lightly. Well, it's quite easy to fit one - the Elise is one of the handful of cars in which a stereo is extra. Why? Because it adds power-sapping weight, and because Lotus figures you'll be having so much fun, you won't want one. And they're almost right...
