Lotus Elise (1996-2001) Review

Category: Roadsters 3.5 out of 5

Summary of the Lotus Elise (1996-2001)

Price Range: £25,900 to £33,500

Assets

Supremely capable and entertaining handling, comfortable ride, eager performance and unexpectedly low running costs.

Drawbacks

A bit noisy, a bit uncomfortable and the hood is a small but cumbersome device.

Verdict

Wonderful, if a machine for driving is what you want.

Lotus Elise Review

Overview3.5 out of 5

The Elise may be priced with BMW Z3s and Alfa Romeo Spiders, but unlike this pair it is quite an extreme sports car aimed at keen enthusiasts. In other words, it is not intended as everyday transport. And the Elise's sophisticated construction explains why this tiny two-seater costs noticeably more than the MGF and the Mazda MX-5. But if you're a keen driver, you'll understand. That's why it holds its value supremely well. It's a fantastic drive, and in truth, not as impractical as it first appears. Replaced by a new Elise early in 2001, there have been a number of different variants, with different power outputs, during this model's five-year life.
