Review

Safety and Security5 out of 5

The Vectra comes with an excellent airbag count - you get twin front airbags, front sidebags and roof-mounted side-curtains as standard - as well as ABS anti-lock braking, emergency brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution. A less common feature are pedals that move away from the driver's feet in the event of a severe impact, lessening the risk of leg injury.

The Vectra scored four out of five stars in the NCAP crash tests, on a par with the Mondeo. And it breaks new ground with its electronic stability controls, which not only counter tail skids but also prevent the car running wide - or understeering - in slippery bends taken too fast. On an unknown, treacherous road this could be a godsend.

Thief-proofing includes an immobiliser, deadlocks and an alarm.
