Hyundai Sonata (2005-) Review

Category: Large Family 3 out of 5

Summary of the Hyundai Sonata (2005-)

Price Range: No data available

Assets

Sharp-suited looks, generous equipment, voluminous space, praiseworthy build quality

Drawbacks

Jangling ride, lack of initial diesel option, soggy cornering, traditionally high deprecation

Verdict

Faced with the twin drawbacks of being a petrol saloon in a class that favours diesel hatchbacks, the latest Sonata fights back with a crisp design, generous equipment and a keen price. Well built and spacious, it still can't shake off its unsophisticated US driving style.

Review

Running Costs2 out of 5

Hyundai hasn't come up with a fuel economy figure yet, but given the light weight and variable valve timing technology in the new engine we'd predict a similar 30mpg combined figure as the current 2.0-litre. That's not fantastic of course, especially if you're a company car driver looking at paying tax on a steep 28 percent of the cost price. The other wallet robber is the old Hyundai bugbear: depreciation. Five-year-old Sonatas can be picked for less than £3000, which delights used buyers as much as it hurts showroom customers. The new model should be better, but it's still going to shed pounds.
