Style, presence, tenacious off-road ability, fine on-road manners, cabin quality, robustness - and sense of well-being it engenders.
Fuel consumption, especially of V8, reliability questionmarks, fiddly air-conditioning.
The Range Rover is back on top as the most desirable - and pricey - off-roader.

There continue to be questionmarks over the reliability and quality of Solihull-built Land Rovers, and whilst this new-generation model appears better-built than its predecessor, with a nicely-finished cabin, it is by no means trouble-free. Owners report a frustrating selection of electronic and electrical glitches, minor defects and, more seriously, failures of air suspension, expensive chassis problems and steering column issues. One supercharged Range Rover tested by 4Car - and specially prepared for us at Land Rover's HQ - had problems with its auto gearbox, juddering at low speeds and then losing transmission completely. It also had some vibrating interior trim and a ropey CD player.
