Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005-) Review

Category: Sporting 4x4s 4.5 out of 5

Summary of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005-)

Price Range: £44,895 to £61,995

Assets

Extremely broad range of on- and off-road capabilities, good on-road refinement, growly-sounding and strong-performing petrol engines, fantastic TDV8 diesel, good interior ambience and an extremely comfortable interior.

Drawbacks

A little heavier than most rivals, and thirstier than some; really needs Dynamic Response to adequately contain body movements on demanding roads.

Verdict

One of the most broadly capable cars on the planet. Its off-road capability probably, though understandably, compromises its on-road agility a little, but its depth of ability pretty much justifies its weight.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport Review

Comfort and Equipment4 out of 5

Cabin comfort is excellent. If you can afford the fuel, the Range Rover Sport would make a fine way to cross a continent, even a continent with iffy roads. The seats are large yet nicely laterally supportive, with fold down armrests for the full armchair experience. The steering wheel adjusts amply for reach and rake, too, although we'd rather the seats could be adjusted to sit a little lower than they can be, particularly on the passenger side, so one could slump a little more. Rear accommodation is fine, with good headroom, adequate legroom. The rear seats could use a ski-hatch, but they split and fold, while the boot is reasonably sized with the seats in place - and volume increases to 2013-litres with them folded.

Noise inside the cabin is well suppressed. The petrol engines emit just the right amount of noise through to the cabin for a pseudo-sporty car, and road noise is almost absent, but there is a little wind noise from the a-pillars and the large door mirrors.

As standard, all cars get 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic gearbox, electronically controlled air-suspension with Terrain Response off-road assistance, alarm, climate control, ABS and stability control. Then come SE, HSE and Supercharged trim levels, which add varying degrees of luxury equipment. For us, the most desirable of the top-end features are Dynamic Response, which sharpens the chassis, and the Logic 7 sound system, which is the mutt's.
