Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005-) Review

Category: Sporting 4x4s 4.5 out of 5

Summary of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005-)

Price Range: £44,895 to £61,995

Assets

Extremely broad range of on- and off-road capabilities, good on-road refinement, growly-sounding and strong-performing petrol engines, fantastic TDV8 diesel, good interior ambience and an extremely comfortable interior.

Drawbacks

A little heavier than most rivals, and thirstier than some; really needs Dynamic Response to adequately contain body movements on demanding roads.

Verdict

One of the most broadly capable cars on the planet. Its off-road capability probably, though understandably, compromises its on-road agility a little, but its depth of ability pretty much justifies its weight.

Running Costs2 out of 5

Fairly frightening, but it's not all bad news. For its size and equipment count, the purchase price is pretty competitive, at £35,000 upwards. Don't expect a discount, by the way, this car will be in demand for some time yet, and residual values will remain extremely strong as a result. Insurance groups are very competitive, too, from 13E for the TD6, though they're 16E for the V8 and 17E for the Supercharged car, better than X5 and Cayenne.

The big bills will come at the pumps, though. Claimed fuel consumption figures are 27.6mpg for the turbodiesel, 18.9mpg for the V8, and 17.8mpg for the Supercharged. However, in reality you might not match these: in the Supercharged car, we achieved 12.1mpg one morning with some hard driving, but bettered that with 16mpg on a cruising afternoon, according to the trip computer (which are not always completely accurate).
