Off-road ability, roomy interior, economical powertrain, good looks.
Expensive, interior feeling dated, not the sportiest on-road drive.
This Freelander offers useful fuel savings if driven correctly; it's an SUV that still makes sense.

The Freelander hasn't had a great record for reliability, but the Freelander 2 (all-new in 2006) has been much-improved and far better-built.
Quality control at the Halewood factory has clearly been stepped up, and there are few reports as yet of serious problems. A few instances of ignition issues with the TD4 have been noted, however (it has a push-button ignition system) and oil losses, heavy fuel consumption (in combination with the auto gearbox) as well as minor electrical glitches, and one 4car reader tells us of water leaks from the tailgate and inside the headlights.
The stop-start system has been exhaustively tested, however, with many miles of durability evaluation, so should not pose any additional problems. The TD4_e has gained modifications including a heavier-duty starter motor, stronger piston ring gear, a new dual-mass flywheel friction plate, an auxiliary water pump to continue the flow of coolant when the engine is shut down, and a longer-life battery.
