Looks good, feels agile, goes well, supremely capable off-road. Roomy, nicely finished and well equipped.
Top models are expensive, ride is firm in the back, fake wood trim option is nasty, no manual option for six-cylinder petrol model.
The Freelander grows up into the best all-rounder in the class, it's a little expensive compared to the competition - but worth it.

The Td4 is the frugal Freelander, with a combined-cycle 37.7mpg and 194g/km CO2 emissions compared with the petrol car's 25.2mpg and 265g/km. Insurance groups start at group 11 for the Td4 S rising to 15 for the i6 HSE, and servicing shouldn't be any more expensive than for a similar-size normal car. Residual values are likely to be strong, at least for the Td4, provided the new Freelander avoids the old one's reliability problems. It's an entirely different car, but the market will still be making the comparison here.
Incidentally, at least £85, depending on model, of the Freelander's purchase price goes to a company called Climate Care, which runs CO2 offset schemes. The amount is designed to reflect the CO2 emitted in 45,000 miles or three years' typical use, plus the CO2 emitted during production.
