Iconic design, outstanding off-road ability, roomy rear in Unlimited four-door model.
On-road performance compared to rivals, thirsty petrol engine.
Much improved on the outgoing model, but still a niche SUV.

The new Wrangler's interior has had the biggest makeover.
It's still very basic in comparison to rivals, but feels like it's been designed rather than cobbled together from what was available. There's acres of utilitarian wipe-clean plastic, but the switchgear is chunky and sensibly laid out. Off-road enthusiasts will be disappointed that the ESP, anti-roll bar and locking diffs buttons are very low down and aren't easily reached.
It's still cramped in the back, but an extra 50cm in the wheelbase of the four-door Unlimited means it's got a surprisingly roomy rear. There's plenty of knee space even with the front seat right back and huge headroom. There's impressive cargo capacity, too; with the rear seats in place it's 1,313 litres, but fold them down and it's 2,456.
The 'Freedom Top' plastic roof can be removed totally or the individual panels above the front seats can be lifted off, Targa-style, and stored in the car.
Soft or hard-tops can be retro-fitted by the dealer. The soft-top Sunrider has been made easier to use than the fiddly canvas hood of the outgoing car. It opens to expose the front row to the elements (and the second row in the Unlimited), then folds back completely. There's still no solution to the untidy way in which is stores in the boot, though.
