Excellent Mercedes diesel engine, proper off-roading ability, old-school styling and trad Jeep appeal, high equipment levels, looks good value for money
Wallowy ride, not much rear legroom or luggage space for such a huge vehicle, not a real seven-seater, cheap and contrived feel for the price
This retro Jeep is retro in more than just its appearance; it lacks the on-road finesse, interior versatility and general abilities of its main rivals. Great off-road, though.

It may not be quite built like a tank, but it's fairly solid. The closely-related Grand Cherokee scored four stars for overall adult occupant protection in the Euro NCAP crash tests, which is rather average these days, and a good three out of four for child protection, but none for pedestrian protection; the Commander does have a different front end, however. Well done to Chrysler Jeep for fitting stability control (ESP) as standard - this is a crucial safety device to have in a high-riding, top-heavy SUV. Standard kit also includes front and side curtain airbags, the latter stretching to the third row of seats, ABS, height-adjustable front seatbelts with pretensioners which hold firm in rough conditions, and a Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser.
