Jeep Commander (2006-) Review

Category: Large 4x4s 2.5 out of 5

Summary of the Jeep Commander (2006-)

Price Range: £31,800 to £31,800

Assets

Excellent Mercedes diesel engine, proper off-roading ability, old-school styling and trad Jeep appeal, high equipment levels, looks good value for money

Drawbacks

Wallowy ride, not much rear legroom or luggage space for such a huge vehicle, not a real seven-seater, cheap and contrived feel for the price

Verdict

This retro Jeep is retro in more than just its appearance; it lacks the on-road finesse, interior versatility and general abilities of its main rivals. Great off-road, though.

Jeep Commander Review

On the road3.5 out of 5

The suspension and steering have been modified for the European-market Commander, which isn't quite as wallowy as the US version. It's still prone to pitch and sway when cornering, however, and it's easy to find yourself wandering off-line, as the steering isn't exactly precise, especially at speed. Where the Commander comes into its own, however, is off-road, where it starts to make sense: this thing is very capable indeed, and utterly user-friendly to pilot (as long as a track is wide enough to accommodate it). Simply select low-ratio gears via the button in the centre console, put your right foot down gently and it'll do all the rest for you; torque, in a 48:52percent front-rear ratio in default mode, can be distributed between the front and rear axles in a near-100percent ratio either way, and this will all happen automatically. With its high ground clearance and under-body skid plates, it'll cope with difficult terrain, and the Commander can even wade through water over half a metre deep.

Most British buyers are going to opt for the Mercedes-sourced 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine - sensibly. This delivers 215bhp and 376lb ft of torque, accelerating the Commander 0-60mph in nine seconds. Top speed is 118mph. Though it feels relaxed, it's deceptively quick both off the mark and mid-range for overtaking - and it takes a strong engine to move something as large as the Commander at this rate. No complaints about towing ability, either: the diesel Commander, badged 3.0 CRD, can tow up to 3360kg. The HEMI V8 (322bhp, 369 lb ft) is even quicker - 129mph and 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds - though as its torque figure suggests, the diesel has more pulling power.
