Category: Large Family
Price Range: £21,558 to £32,080
Good value, well-equipped, capable cruiser, pleasant auto box, economical, low emissions.
Stodgy on cornering, too softly sprung on bumpier roads, cabin feels old-fashioned, poor residuals.
Sometimes it does feel like and old man's car, but you get plenty of kit for your money. German rivals are better to drive.

The X-Type was crash tested by Euro NCAP in 2002 and it achieved a fairly creditable four stars for occupancy protection, but only one for pedestrian protection.
Driver, passenger and front and rear curtain airbags are standard as are anti-lock brakes and front and rear seat belt pre-tensioners. Dynamic stability control with emergency brake distribution is also included on all X-Types.
Two-stage unlock, locking wheelnuts, remote central locking with drive-away locking intrusion and an alarm and immobiliser come as standard.
